“Meet the Candidates” The Village Presbyterian Church at Bryndwr (365A Aorangi Road) is once again organising a “Meet the Candidates Evening” tonight at 7pm for candidates standing in the Ilam electorate at the forthcoming general election.
You’re invited to come along and hear your candidates speak and answer questions. The meeting will be chaired by Rev David Coster. Any enquiries can be directed to Gavin James, care of the Church office (351 6664). If you want to send through questions for the meeting, you are welcome to do so. REPAIR! REUSE! Our first ever Repair Café will be on our community market day, Saturday 3 October from 9.30am at Bryndwr. Tell your neighbours, young families and anyone needing free fix-it help to come along and speak to one of our volunteers! On hand will be: Bishopdale Men’s Shed, a home maintenance DIY-er, clothing machinist and generalists who love gluing, using tools and fixing things! BYO small items for repair advice and practical help. No guarantees we can fix it, but we will try! On offer are: Small sewing alterations and hemming. Home maintenance advice. Try your hand at a woodworking project (suitable for older kids). Woodwork tips. Broken jewellery fixed. Miscellaneous items glued, screwed or nailed! (Please note Electrical items can only be repaired by a registered electrician).
September Parish Council Update: The parish council held our meeting on Tuesday 8 September at Papanui. A lot has happened since our last meeting so it was good to come together to regroup.
Since our last meeting New Zealand has entered Level 2 restrictions again, so we have been using our COVID-19 policy. Please remember to sanitise your hands when entering the buildings and ensure you fill in the contact tracing register or use the NZ COVID Tracer app on your phone. If you would like to wear a mask that is fine too! At level 2, social distancing is still important, so you will see that our seats are spaced apart to allow for this. We are also limited to 100 people only within the building for services. To allow us to keep track of how many are in the building please ensure that you use the front entrance when possible.
Our Health and Safety Officer Frances arranged for a First Aid course to be held at Papanui, and we had a turnout of 13 people who completed the Basic First Aid certificate.
The changes to worship have been discussed and the general feeling is that it has gone well. The Thursday service at Papanui regularly has 8-12 people who have given positive feedback, and the Sunday service at Bryndwr has a nice buzz. We’re all enjoying the inclusion of the children. We are still working to improve the sound systems and screens at both buildings to ensure everyone can see and hear comfortably.
Our Annual General Meeting is coming up on – 18 October 2020. At this time, I would like to call for a couple of nominations to Parish Council. Nominations need to be received before the October 4 2020.
Spiritual Recovery: 11 October, 4.00 – 5.30 pm at the Village Papanui. When people in our faith communities hurt us by their behaviour or attitudes, it can leave emotional scars. This gathering time offers a safe space to acknowledge these hurts and take steps to “live freely and lightly” by (re)connecting with God. Koha appreciated. Contact Megan Blakie for more information.
