The Village Presbyterian Church Parish Council December Update

The December meeting of the Parish Council was held on Tuesday 13th December in The Nest at Papanui.  The devotion was presented by Josh Olds.  He talked about the tradition of gift-giving. Myrrh, Frankincense, and Gold were brought by the Magi. Josh explained the symbolism of each and then asked us to think about the gifts or talents that we could offer to others.

Finance:

The monthly financial accounts were presented and passed.

Judith reported on the past month’s accounts and noted the following points:

Offerings slightly exceeded budget for the month of October, but are less than budgeted for the year to date.

We are awaiting the Presbytery grant towards the intern payment. Donations received included monies from the final closure of accounts relating to St Andrews at Rangi Ruru parish.

Our expenses are close to budget. Some unbudgeted costs for the sale of Valerie Place are still to be reimbursed. There is some work to be done around the value of the Land and Buildings to reflect the sale of Valerie Place.

The end-of-year review is ready to be signed off following a few minor adjustments.

General Matters:

Reports were received from the Community Centre, the Ministry Team, and the property convener for the manses.

  • No update on a replacement for Gene with 24/7 at Burnside – some concern was expressed that this will reduce her chance to make connections with new young people.
  • It was agreed that at the 29th January service, we will have a 10.30 start to reduce the time between the end of the service and the start of the “Feast”.
  • The Truman Road manse garden has had quite a number of hours spent on it and is now tidy.  The challenge will be to keep it this way.
  • There was a discussion about the need to fill the role of Safety Officer. A job description is to be sourced and circulated.
  • The responses to the online section of the parish survey were discussed. There has been a higher response than in the last survey.
  • Parish Council Retreat Day – February 11th at Hanmer Springs.
  • Bryndwr Manse Rental: The Parish Council agreed that the Truman Road Manse should be rented for a period of one year after the necessary work has been done to bring it up to the Healthy Home Standard.
  • Covid: Members of the congregation are to be reminded that there is the option to wear a mask at services.

This coming Sunday, 29 January, we are looking forward to combining as a whole Village for fellowship, worship, and a shared ‘feast’. Please note the service will start with Bagels & Hot Drinks at 10am, followed by worship (10.30am), and aiming to share food together at 12pm. We look forward to celebrating together! (Surname A-L please bring a salad, M-Z please bring a dessert).  The meat will be provided.
