Response to Cyclone Gabrielle – retiring offering today: Parish Council has agreed to make a contribution of $1,000 towards St Andrew’s Church in Hastings which has set up a service called genLend to bring equipment like generators, water pumps and similar items from around the country into Hawke’s Bay as part of the disaster response. As part of this, financial donations are also being accepted. The Rev Jill McDonald writes that “The clean-up is immense and the need is urgent”. We would like to invite members of the congregation to join with us in support of this initiative by having a retiring offering today. Alternatively, donations towards this could be paid directly into our bank account – please identify such donations with your name and ‘Cyclone’ in the reference field.
Donations for Burnside Primary school families: We welcome donations of non-perishable food items (canned veggies, rice, pasta, pasta sauce, spreads eg peanut butter, jam, coffee, and tea). We don’t need toiletries at this time. Thank you for your generous support.

Listening people into life – the profession of Spiritual Companionship/Direction
Companioning someone spiritually is a role that’s been around for centuries. The ancient Celts called such people ‘anam cara’, or soul friend. Nowadays, the companioning role has become professionalised, but it remains a confidential and dedicated time for individuals to explore and deepen their spiritual life.
I liken it somewhat to being a spiritual life coach: we help people explore and develop a meaningful faith in the context of their life. Our time together is usually an hour once a month and is self-directed (what you do and don’t share and explore is up to you). My primary role is to listen and reflect back in helpful – and non-judgemental – ways.
Questions that might be niggling you at the moment: Does God feel a bit distant? Or is nudging you in some way?
How is your faith impacting your daily life, and vice versa? What is bringing you purpose and meaning?
What spiritual practices bring joy? What’s in need of a change?
