The Village Presbyterian Church Annual General Meeting –
Following worship on Sunday September 10, 2023 at approx. 11.15am. Apologies for those unable to be there, can be made to Sabrina at Bryndwr or Tracey at Papanui.
We are sad to hear that Mabel Boyd passed away in Wellington on August 16. She had just celebrated her 97th Birthday. Mabel had a long history with St Giles and The Village – attending services while we were meeting at St Andrew’s Chapel. Our thoughts are with Sandra (daughter) and the rest of the family.
Kids Club is on each Monday 3-5pm. If you have children or grandchildren that would like to join the Kid’s Club, you can get a registration form from the office, or contact Kate B or Dan. We are looking for adult leaders to help volunteer, a flexible arrangement is fine. We are in need of someone to run the kitchen in August – (or different people on a roster during that time).
Our Sunday Sermon is usually posted to the Village Church website on a Monday. If you can’t be at Church on a Sunday and would like to read the Sermon, you’ll find it under the ‘Reflections’ heading – go to www.villagechurch.nz
Two musical opportunities 27 August:-
The first is “French Romantic Organ Music” played by John Dodgshun at St Andrew’s at Rangi Ruru at 2pm.
Music by: Boellmann, Lefebure-Wely, Franck, Guilmant & Chauvet. Programmes $5.00, at the door. Students free.
The second is “Jazzmatazz” Afternoon Delight from 4-5pm, at St. Silas Anglican Church, Main North Road, Redwood. An hour of jazz (choir) followed by a cup of tea or coffee. An all-ages event. A donation/koha at the door, plus something for the food bank would be appreciated.
Any questions, please phone Chris Richardson, who is part of the choir – phone 359 6063
The last Sunday service at Redwood will be held today, August 27th commencing at 10am. A special service of celebration and thanksgiving for all that has been at St Lukes over the years. The service will be followed by a late morning tea.

The Village Presbyterian Church Parish Council August Update
The August meeting of the Parish Council was held on Tuesday 8th in The Nest at Papanui.
Devotions: David reflected on the joys of feeding birds in winter and read a poem by Brian Turner “Birdland,” finishing with a prayer about birds by Terry Williams.
Matters Arising from Circulated Reports:
Finance Report and Budget: Judith presented her report and noted the following key points:
The accounts presented were for the church only – the accounts combining the church and community centre have still to be completed and show an operating deficit.
After entries for the revaluation of the properties including the sale of the Valerie Place property, there is a net surplus for the year.
Year-end adjustments include professional fees, holiday pay and an increased amount for depreciation.
The Statement of Financial Position reflects year-end adjustments and reconciliation of all accounts.
Our application to have the bathroom fit out at Truman Road paid from capital funds was successful. $15,000 is to be transferred from our Property capital account to the Bryndwr Maintenance Fund.
Generally, expenses are in line with the cash budget.
The budget has been prepared on the premise that the community centre is able to support the church at the same level as last year
Other Circulated Reports:
Ministry Report
- Community Centre Committee are looking for new members.
- Hanmer Complex: New managers will be required. There are some ideas about what to do with the rest of the site – maybe a youth space, and improved facilities.
Matters Arising from Circulated Reports:
General:
- Parish Council membership and nominations were discussed
- StARR update: The current Memorandum of Understanding is to be discussed.
Presbytery and asked them to arrange a meeting of the MOU members.
- Follow up from the Elders meeting: 35 people attended – There was a lot of collective wisdom, and knowledge in the room. The resulting summary document will be circulated.
- Renaming the clothing shop: Parish Council supports the development and greater visibility of the Clothing Shop. Any name suggestions to be sent to Dan.
- FYI General Assembly commissioners: Liam Boardman will attend as a young adult commissioner with Presbytery. Judith Souness has volunteered to go as the Village representative.
- Consideration was given to ongoing management of the Redwood building once Sunday services conclude on August 27th.
