Rev. Laurie Richards:  With sadness we advise that the Rev. Laurie Richards died on Thursday 2nd May at Christchurch hospital.  At Laurie’s request a private family burial was held on Friday 3rd May.

A memorial service was held at Papanui, 2pm, Friday 10th May.

Age Concern – Steady as You Go, Falls Prevention Class:  We have arranged with Age Concern to offer a weekly, community-based Falls Prevention Class at The Village Church at Papanui.  Beginning date is Thursday 16 May, at 9.30am.  Koha of $3 per session.  If you have questions about this please phone Anna Tillman, Health Promoter at Age Concern, 331 7811.

“Fam Story” Have you been thinking about writing stories about your family and your life for future generations to know more about who they are, where they have come from, and what’s gone before?

Defyd Williams is offering a six-week course at The Village, Papanui (in the Creative Nest), tentatively planned for Thursday afternoons, 2pm to 4pm. The course cost is $15 per session ($90 for course). Defyd trained as a history teacher and as a journalist for The Press (1986-1999).

The six sessions are:

  1. The Art of Storytelling – How I would like to be remembered (finding voice).
  2. The Main Idea – Childhood memories.
  3. What Works? – Who were my ancestors? Piecing the past together.
  4. Design and Art – Career path – publishing alternatives.
  5. Words – People in my life – proofing and editing.
  6. Gifts for the Future – who do I think I am? Turangawaewae and Whakapapa.

Course Objectives:

1, Develop storytelling, styles, and skills (your voice).

2. Identify story themes and content that are most likely to interest younger generations.

3. How will we pass these stories on.
