Table Talk presents… Mamma Mia 2 – Here we go again!

As a fundraiser for Operation Refugee, we are running a family-friendly, fun movie night.

When: Sunday 2nd June (King’s Birthday weekend), 4.15pm for a 4.30pm start (7pm finish)

Where: The Village Papanui.

Pizza dinner, snacks, and dessert will be provided.  If you have any dietary preferences, please let us know.  Any koha received (for the food) will be donated to Operation Refugee (Christian World Service).

Please come along and bring your friends and family, anyone who wants good company, a break from cooking dinner, and the chance to join in singing some great Abba tunes! If you have any questions, please contact Annie or Kate.

Calling all gardeners!  Burnside Primary is looking for volunteers to help, one hour a week with native plants and raised bed veggie gardens at the school.  Contact Bianca, the science teacher, at – b.woyak@burnsideprimary.school.nz

Knit for Purpose!  At the Village Community Market, Saturday 8 June from 9am to 11.30am.  Peggy squares knitted into blankets will be donated to vulnerable communities via Volunteering Canterbury.

Volunteering Canterbury (VC) is collecting knitted (or crocheted) peggy squares, with the aim of providing blankets to those in need in our community (through local organisations).  The link below will take you to the information page, which has links to a knitting pattern, a ’how to knit’ video, and a how-to crochet’ video. https://volcan.org.nz/news/knit-for-purpose

For those who don’t use a computer, a printed copy of the pattern is available from either Papanui or Bryndwr office.  If you have any squares to donate, simply leave them at either the Papanui or Bryndwr Village offices, and we will arrange delivery to Community House. (VC need the squares into them by 8 June for this campaign).

The time-line for this year’s campaign is very short, but if this is something you would enjoy doing at your leisure, we would love to collect peggy squares during the year, to enable a large contribution for next winter.

They are happy for squares to be made in wool, cotton, acrylic or a mix, but ask that you indicate which it is.  This will ensure that blankets destined for newborns and neonates are 100% wool.

“Fam Story” Have you been thinking about writing stories about your family and your life for future generations to know more about who they are, where they have come from, and what’s gone before?

Defyd Williams is offering a six-week course at The Village, Papanui (in the Creative Nest), tentatively planned for a Thursday afternoon 2pm to 4pm. The course cost is $15 per session ($90 for course). Defyd trained as a history teacher and as a journalist for The Press (1986-1999).

The six sessions are:

  1. The Art of Storytelling – How I would like to be remembered (finding voice).
  2. The Main Idea – Childhood memories.
  3. What Works? – Who were my ancestors? Piecing the past together.
  4. Design and Art – Career path – publishing alternatives.
  5. Words – People in my life – proofing and editing.
  6. Gifts for the Future – who do I think I am? Turangawaewae and Whakapapa. (A journey of supporting each other).

Course Objectives:

1, Develop storytelling, styles, and skills (your voice).

  1. Identify story themes and content that are most likely to interest younger generations.
  2. How will we pass these stories on?

Let Tracey at the Papanui office or Defyd know if you are interested. Course participation will be limited to 8 to 12 participants.

Please let us know by May 31st if you are interested.  We are looking at a mid-June start date – with each session running for 2-3 hours on a Thursday afternoon.

May/June birthdays will be celebrated with a potluck tea on Friday, 14 June at 6pm. If you would like to join us, please RSVP to Catherine or Don.

The Village Market Each first Saturday of the month in our Bryndwr building, we run a pop-up market which is now in its third year!  It continues to be a place where people gather to buy, catch up, donate or just hang out together. There is a group who meet to knit & chat and there’s great coffee available.

This month the Market will be held Saturday June 8th

The market has a focus of good quality second-hand household goods, toys, books; and from time to time, baking, jams, plants, and our existing pre-loved clothing shop.

As with our clothing shop, we rely on the community to donate goods. Please do let us know if you’re having a cleanout, downsizing or simply having a change around, we are happy to pick up & collect! Please contact the Bryndwr Office at 351 6664 for more information.
