The Village Presbyterian Church Parish Council April Update

The April meeting of the Parish Council was held on Tuesday 10th in The Nest at Papanui.

The devotion was provided by Bryan Wright who described some of his experiences with hymns and we listened to his favourite, “God be in my head, and in my understanding”.

Redwood Congregation and Building:

Gordon D. was welcomed to the meeting and asked to comment on the current position of the proposed upgrade to the Redwood building.

Gordon described several possible scenarios comprising a complete upgrade including the upstairs room and the kitchen.

A price had been received some time ago for this work but, in the current building climate, was likely to have increased markedly.

Gordon then explained what would be required for a fire upgrade with minimal alterations.  The upstairs room would just be a storage area.  This would mean this room could not be used for any other purposes including meetings. The reduced scope of work would still cost approximately $150,000 and would take around about 2 to 4 months to complete.

Sally T. and Alistair P. spoke about discussions with Redwood parishioners about the future.  Further discussion regarding the future of Redwood is scheduled for the Parish Council Meeting in May.

Finance:

Judith Souness presented the monthly financial accounts.  These were accepted. She then reported on the past month’s accounts and noted the following points:

  • Monthly offerings in March were approximately $1,000 above budget, but down for year.
  • Donations during this period were a combination of Cyclone Relief and Easter Camp contributions along with higher rental income for buildings.
  • Expenses during the month showed little deviation from Budget apart from repairs and maintenance.
  • A revaluation of the buildings needs to be completed for insurance purposes.
  • One oven in the Bryndwr kitchen needs to be wired into a new circuit. The possibility of upgrading the old stove will be investigated.

Reports:

Reports were received from the Community Centre and the Ministry Team.

General:

  • The importance of thanking our volunteers was discussed. The possibility of doing this in conjunction with one of the feast events was considered.
  • Nominations for National Moderator: Following discussion at our March meeting two possible candidates were approached, however, both declined to have their names put forward.
