The Village Elders’ Hui – Sunday, 25 June @ 4pm in The Lounge @ Papanui with drinks and nibbles.

Stream Cleanup:  Sat 1 July 10am

BYO wellies or gummies… Anyone keen to help the fishies and wildlife in the stream (Bryndwr) by removing debris and rubbish pop along during the July market. Let me know if you want to help or just turn up with gumboots!! (If you want to keep dry on the riverbank, then you can help dispose of any rubbish we find!).

An Eco-Church initiative.

Our Clothing Shop:  The clothing shop is looking for more volunteers.  We are now down to the minimum number of helpers we can operate with.  If you can help one Saturday morning a month, I would love to hear from you.  This shop provides a great community service as well as helping the Church coffers. Please contact Janice C.

Kids Club is on each Monday 3-5pm.  If you have children or grandchildren that would like to join the Kid’s Club, you can get a registration form from the office, or contact Kate B or Dan.

We are looking for adult leaders to help volunteer, a flexible arrangement is fine.  We are in need of someone to run the kitchen in June, July, and August – (or different people on a roster during that time).

Lego – we are looking for Lego for Village Kids and Kids Club.  If you have any spare lego, please contact Kate B, or the office.

Situations Vacant: We currently have positions within The Village that we need to fill.  If you think that you would be able to fill one of these roles, please contact Dan or David B. for a copy of a job description.

Health and Safety Officer:

Oversee health and safety policies and procedures. Have oversight for building safety checklists. Ensure that an annual H&S review is carried out

The Village News Co-editor:

We are looking for a second person to help organise the production of the quarterly newsletter. Contact Bryan W. for further details.

Cyclone Appeal for the Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu
Tropical Cyclones Judy and Kevin hit Vanuatu within 48 hours of each other on March 1 and 3 2023.

The Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu has taken some time to gather information about damage to schools, churches, and other property, as a result of these cyclones. Many roofs were ripped off and water damage was sustained, along with other impacts. Due to the isolated nature of many of Vanuatu’s islands it has not been easy getting all these details together. But information recently received has estimated that repairs to PCV property on several affected islands will cost at least NZD $320,000.

PCANZ Global Mission has launched an appeal to help contribute towards this.
Donations to the Cyclone Appeal:
Donations can be made online to 02 0500 0086963 10. In the reference put PCV Cyclone Appeal. Send an email confirming your donation to Katrina Graham, katrina@presbyterian.org.nz, so a receipt can be issued.

The Village Presbyterian Church Parish Council June Update

The June meeting of the Parish Council was held on Tuesday 13th in The Nest at Papanui.

Time was taken to remember Frances C.: her delicious food, the activities undertaken by her including the clothing shop with her granddaughter, her love of jigsaw puzzles and the missing piece that is now found, the running jokes we had with her, and her dislike of the communion cups and washing them! Her presence throughout the Village will be missed. Her generosity with her time, her honesty, and commitment will be remembered.

Finance Report: – Judith presented her monthly report and noted the following key points:

  • Analysis of revenue against budget – decrease in offerings and grant income, increase in interest and the unbudgeted StARR amount.
  • Analysis of expenses against budget – less in ministry, intern and youth worker costs, and less than budgeted for the Bryndwr roof repair.
  • There are some variations in the May Accounts with some changes still to be completed.
  • Wages: A quote from CATAS (an organisation that provides wage-paying services) was accepted. CATAS is a registered PAYE intermediary with IRD and they provide services to churches, community trusts, and faith-based organisations.

Other Finance Matters:

  • Insurance: Following some rationalisation, it looks like we will have a 20% increase, not 25% as originally estimated.
  • Truman Road manse: Waiting to hear from a prospective renter. A gardener will be employed to keep the property tidy.
  • Virtue Place manse: The gas fire is to be replaced with a heat pump.
  • The Assembly assessment will be about the same as last year.
  • The Village has made a donation to Matt B.’s farewell gift. He leaves Burnside Primary at the end of Term 2.
  • Judith continues to work with the bank to sort out all the paperwork required for anti-money laundering requirements.

Other Circulated Reports:

  • Ministry
  • Community Centre

Matters Arising from Circulated Reports:

  • Sunday evening service: We will start with about 4 or 5 young people from youth group who are musicians, then expand it to other youth group members and anyone else who might enjoy gathering at that time. It will be based at Bryndwr. The frequency of the service is yet to be determined.  The aim is to start small and casual.

General:

Vacancies: Health & Safety, Child Protection, Privacy Officer positions need to be filled

  • Child protection officer – police vetting and ethics training checking – Bryan W. is interested in this role.
  • Parish Councillors were asked to consider these roles, or if they know of anyone who could do them.

Village News

  • Organising The Village News has worked well having 2 people carry out this task. Bryan will continue in this role but a second person will be required to assist. We will advertise to see who might be interested in working with Bryan.

Proposed Papanui Drop in Space & CPT Application

  • It was moved and agreed that Parish Council endorses the proposal to develop a Drop-In Community Space at Papanui and that a congregational meeting on July 2nd be called to seek approval to apply to the CPT for the use of capital funds for this project.
  • Those at the meeting discussed how this venture would operate and who would be needed to oversee the project.

Vision/Purpose review

Dan has completed a draft review of the document and presented suggested updates.  These will be circulated and the updated version will be available at the July meeting.

“New Ministry and Mission Proposal”

Notice of Congregational Meeting2 July at 11:15am

The Parish Council is excited to share an idea to create a new ministry and mission, based from The Nest space at Papanui.

The heart of this is to create a consistent presence on this site & connect more with the immediate community. This builds on the significant history of The Creative Nest and links into a growing sense of energy around a few current activities.

The initiative will need significant funding. The first avenue that we are pursuing is to make an application to utilise some of our capital funds. To make this application to the Church Property Trustees we need both Congregation and Presbytery approval. More detailed information on the plans will be made available before the meeting.

Kainga Ora update:

The move-in date for Aorangi, Bevin and Clyde Rd developments’ first 18 houses is set for 30 June.  There is a mix of 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom houses.  Landscaping may be ongoing after the move-in date.  The 16 1-bedroom units are scheduled to be completed by November.

The local community board and Kainga Ora are working with the Village and other local organisations to compile information on services and activities available in Bryndwr. The council will fund a newsletter, called the Bryndwr Banter, to be given to all the new households and hopefully to the wider Bryndwr area.

A Bryndwr welcoming event, funded by the council is also envisioned in the late winter/spring and it is currently being coordinated by the local community board.
